For those that grew up eating cream of wheat, it is such a nostalgic flavor. This simple, 4 ingredient cream of wheat recipe, is simple and delicious. I have made it with many varieties of wheat including: Hard white, hard red, soft white, Einkorn, Khorasan and spelt. I’m certain there are others you could try it with.
When I switched my kitchen over to fresh milled flour, there were days I was too busy and did not have time to bake. I did not want to miss out on the nutrients of the fresh milled flour. This recipe is my go-to when I do not have time to bake something!

Ingredients you will need to make 4 Ingredient Cream of Wheat
- Fresh milled wheat-I mill any grain on a courser setting. On the stone mills that can do cracked wheat, you probably want to tighten it down slightly from that setting.
- Butter
- Salt
- Water-You can use milk if you prefer
- Sweetener-(Optional) I like to use maple syrup
You can add in any of the extras from above, this is just my base recipe.
Equipment needed
- Grain Mill
- Whisk
- Small Sauce Pan
- Measuring Cups
- Liquid Measuring Cups
- Measuring Spoons
Time to make your Cream of Wheat
First, I mill my wheat berries on the courses setting on my WonderMill. As I mentioned above, the stone mills are able to make a VERY course cracked wheat and you do not want it that course.
Next I add my milk or water to my sauce pan.
Heat over medium heat just before it comes to a boil. Slowly stream in your wheat, whisking as you add. Whisk for 1-2 minutes until it is smooth and begins to thicken.
Turn off the heat.
Pour into bowls, stir in butter, salt and sweetener. Top with any fruit or nuts and enjoy!

Frequently asked questions: Cream of Wheat
What grain is best for this?
I love the flavor of Einkorn and Khorasan for this recipe, but you truly can use any grain. You will develop a preference as you try them all.
Can I reheat leftovers?
This recipe is best eating right away. If you do have leftovers, put them in the refrigerator and then add more milk or water to reheat.
What if mine turns out lumpy?
It is very important to whisk the entire time you are adding the wheat. Also, some grains are “thirstier” don’t be afraid to add a little more water or milk to get it to the consistency you prefer.
